Ingredients:
6 bratwurst sausages
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
12 ounces beer (lager or ale recommended)
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish
Directions:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large ovenproof skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, sugar, and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
Push the onions to the sides of the skillet and add the bratwurst sausages. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side just to brown them slightly.
Pour the beer over the sausages and onions. Stir in the Dijon mustard.
Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and braise for about 30-35 minutes, turning the sausages halfway through, until they are fully cooked and the beer has reduced into a flavorful sauce.
Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley before serving. This dish is perfect served with crusty bread, mashed potatoes, or sauerkraut, offering a hearty and satisfying meal that combines rich flavors with the deep, malty tones of beer.
