Ingredients:
3½ lbs potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
1½ lbs ground beef (or ground turkey)
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp paprika (optional)
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup (or cream of cheddar or cream of chicken)
¾ cup milk
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of cheddar and mozzarella)
1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for greasing the dish)
Instructions:
1. Prep the oven and pan:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with oil or butter.
2. Cook the ground beef:
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and chopped onion until browned (5–7 minutes).
Drain excess fat.
Add garlic (if using), salt, pepper, and paprika. Stir and set aside.
3. Make the sauce:
In a bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth.
4. Layer the casserole:
In the prepared dish, layer as follows:
1. Half the sliced potatoes
2. Half the beef mixture
3. Half the soup mixture
4. Half the cheese
Repeat layers:
Potatoes → beef → soup → cheese
5. Bake:
Cover the dish with aluminum foil.
Bake for 60 minutes covered.
Remove foil and bake another 20–25 minutes, or until potatoes are fork-tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
6. Rest & serve:
Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving so it firms up a bit.
