Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef (or thinly sliced steak)
1 large onion, thinly sliced
3 tbsp unsalted butter
2 cups beef broth
1 packet (1 oz) French onion soup mix
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp dried thyme
8 oz egg noodles, uncooked
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese (or mozzarella)
Salt and pepper, to taste
Chopped parsley (for garnish)
Instructions:
1. Cook the Beef:
In a large skillet, melt 1 tbsp butter over medium-high heat.
Add ground beef (or steak), season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
2. Caramelize the Onions:
In the same skillet, add remaining 2 tbsp butter and sliced onions.
Cook over medium heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized.
3. Combine Ingredients:
Return the cooked beef to the skillet with the caramelized onions.
Add French onion soup mix, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. Stir well to combine.
Bring to a simmer.
4. Add Noodles:
Add uncooked egg noodles, stirring to submerge them in the liquid.
Cover and simmer for 10-12 minutes, or until the noodles are tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
5. Add Cheese:
Stir in shredded Swiss cheese until melted and creamy.
6. Serve:
Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot!
Tips:
Extra Creamy: Add a splash of heavy cream or sour cream for a creamier dish.
Cheesy Top: Transfer to a baking dish, top with extra cheese, and broil for 2-3 minutes for a crispy top.
Boost Flavor: Add a splash of red wine when caramelizing the onions for a richer flavor.
